“You are the worst thing that’s ever happened to me.”
That, and:
“What happens in Fight Club, stays in Fight Club.”
Very memorable lines. I watched FIGHT CLUB last night on AMC, or the American Movie Classics TV Channel. It’s funny, I have some sort of hurdle about watching movies. I own at least 4 dozen of them I have yet to watch. I’ll go to movies in the theatre if I’m really interested, say the new Star Trek or the latest Harry Potter. Recently, I’ve had some “movie nights” with a certain special someone, and the movies I’ve watched in that situation now have an extra layer of memory and meaning to me. But on my own, looking to kill a few hours, I seldom grab a DVD, or to be honest these days, a book. I’ve lost a certain level of escapism that I used to gravitate towards. I’m not sure why, because my entire adult life has been centered around behavior that can be boiled down to trying to escape from something, anything, that was stressing me out, bringing me down, etc.
Hey, Fatal Interview is a podcast of self-exploration, and I’m going to cop-out and say I don’t do “real” reviews anyway.
So, FIGHT CLUB. It came out in 1999, 11 years ago. Really? That long ago? I’ve been aware that on some level it’s been an iconic movie in popular culture. I think I primarily avoided it because for a long time I’ve had a bit of a Brad Pitt hurdle. I can’t tell you why, the dude just struck me in a weird way. The only movie I can remember seeing with him in it was “Seven”, and I didn’t like that one at all, too dark for my tastes. But I’ve learned that he does give a good amount of his money to charity, especially trying to help rebuild New Orleans, and that’s the sort of thing that sways me, so lately when a Brad Pitt movie crosses my mind, I think, “yeah, I could watch that.”
Last night Bruce Lee’s ENTER THE DRAGON was on before FIGHT CLUB. I hadn’t seen that one either, to be honest! I dug it, as much for the 70s-ishness of it as for the martial arts. I’ve been working quite a bit these last two days on a musical project for Simply Syndicated, and I think I mentally just wanted to take a holiday from thinking too much. Fair enough.
So, what did I think of FIGHT CLUB? I hadn’t read the book. Now I want to. I’ve heard interesting things about Chuck Palhaniuk, mostly from my friend Jakob, and I need something to force me to check out new (to me) authors. I got a sense of railing against social injustice, Vonnegut-esque social and/or moral commentary, and a twisted sense of humor from the movie. If that’s in the book as well, then I think I’ll enjoy it.
At one point, I started to think, “OK, that’s enough character development, we need to get the plot rolling along here.” This was quite a ways into the movie. But then in checking the TV GUIDE channel during a commercial break I saw the movie was 2 hours and 20 minutes long. “Aw shit,” I thought, “with commercial breaks that’s 3 hours of watching TV, I’m going to be up until 1am!” But yeah, right about then, the plot took off a bit.
I have to compliment Ed Norton, Brad Pitt and Helena Bonham Carter on doing a fine acting job. With famous people, I often have a sense of “oh, I’m watching so-and-so in this movie,” instead of getting immersed in a character. Or to put that generally, even though I’m not an actor, sometimes I notice a person “acting”, instead of getting immersed in a character. There really was never a point in my watching of FIGHT CLUB that I felt disconnected from the story because of this.
I honestly had never heard anything about this movie other than the famous quote, “What happens in Fight Club, stays in Fight Club.” That and I recalled some vague images of guys fighting in a basement. I had no idea what to expect from this story. I didn’t even know what the bar of soap meant on the movie poster! This is where my reviewing skills, or lack thereof, start to show thin. I enjoyed the movie. It’s hard for me to get invested in characters sometimes, and I found myself wondering early on, what was going to happen to these people? I admit I started to feel something like unease when the extra guys started moving into the house. Perhaps it felt like the focus was shifting from the three main characters. Even though on the surface I knew the activity in the house was an extension of Fight Club, I found myself wondering, “what is the point of all of this?” The revelation that Tyler Durdin was just a facet of Ed Norton’s character really threw me, I dug it. Like I said, I knew so little about this movie going into it.
I the end, I think the movie was successful because, when it was over, I was left pondering my own personality and goals. After finally sleeping though the night, this morning again finds me thinking about these things, wondering about the “Tyler” in me, wondering about accepting where the winds of fate blow us individually, and about our role in the juggernaut of a capitalist economy. If a piece of art makes you think and reflect on your humanity, it’s a success. And so I will consider the movie FIGHT CLUB.
I even felt like getting in to a fight, win or lose, there was some manly, testosterone-driven glory to it. I imagine the endorphins are a rush, and I’m usually not an adrenalin junkie. Yeah, sometimes a guy needs to get in touch with his inner “Tyler”.
Oh, and Bob’s/Meatloaf’s “boobs” freaked me out.

Truth Between Children
Many words can be used to describe a canyon, one perceives intent and form as one wants them to seem. Some people hear the peace of night as the loneliest of fates while others know this silence as a child’s fatal breath.
A quiet descends upon the thick gloom of shadows, liquid in their depth, pierced only by the underwater glow of a weak and pale sunshine denied by small windows, an artificial galaxy creating worlds we long to discover.
Be mindful of the air you choose, trapped by structure beneath the decay of sheltered footsteps we long to match, the stride we are taught to which we must subscribe, the step of marionettes, mocking buildings flattening dormant grass.
One gives a heartbeat, one gives in to thrill, and magic is but science without the bonds defined. Once blinded by vision, the painful, inflating lungs, one gives in to magic, the soul’s tragic, childlike song.
It does not matter what is said, the truth of the matter is a rare exposure.

a rare gem and a complicated engine
“Tony Pucci is a rare gem and a complicated engine. He can be miraculously enthusiastic and faithful to the wildest causes exactly like he can be a devastated mess as if his princess could never go back to his arms. He is a dreamer and a hard worker. He is unsure and persistent. He is angry and quiet. Sometimes he calls me when he just woke up and I tell him: Don’t mumble to a Brazilian!” – Leilah Accioly
